POWER BILL TO REDUCE AS 14 SOLAR DEVELOPERS SINGNED FRONT-RUNNER SOLAR POWER PURCHASE AGREEMENTS: FASHOLA
14 solar developers signed Front-Runner Solar Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) worth 1.75 billion dollars with the Federal Government of Nigeria to build power infrastructure and generate 1,125 megawatts of renewable energy in Nigeria.
After signing the agreement on behalf of the Federal Government, Babatunde Raji Fashola, Minister of Power, Works and Housing, said the agreement shows the government’s commitment to diversify the country’s power sector and provide stable power supply to Nigerians. According to him, the government plans to explore every source of energy to “create a robust dynamic mix of energy.”
Fashola also assured Nigerians that they will pay less for electricity as solar technology advances. “We feel this is a good place to begin and we say that these pioneers have opened the door for other players to come in. We expect that the price will drop further as the technology gets better.”
In May, Fashola buttressed the need to get more power after declaring that the power being generated in the country was insufficient. The recent spate of oil pipeline vandalism by militants in the Niger Delta has grossly affected Nigeria’s power generation capacity, amongst other things.
The minister also revealed that Nigeria’s maximum energy output since 1950 stands at 5,074 megawatts. Currently, the average megawatts supply is at 3, 500, whereas the country is said to need at least 180, 000 megawatts; an average of 1,000 megawatts for every one million Nigerians.

Nigerian Solar Capital Partners – Ganjuwa, Bauchi State – 100MW
Afrinergia Power Limited – Kokowa in Nasarawa State – 50MW
Motir Dusable Limited – Udi, Enugu State – 100MW
Nova Solar 5 Farm Limited – Katsina State – 100MW
Kvk Power Nigeria Pvt Limited – Yabo, Sokoto State – 100MW
Middle Band Solar One Limited – Lokoja West, Kogi – 100MW
LR Aaron Power Limited – Abuja – 100MW
Nova Scotia Power Development Limited – Dutse, Jigawa – 80MW
CT Cosmos – Kaduna West, Kaduna State – 70MW
Oriental Renewable Solutions – Kakowa, Jigawa – 50MW
Quaint Abiba Power Limited – Manchor Local Government, Kaduna – 50MW
Anjeed Innova Group – Kafanchan, Kaduna – 100MW
Fashola advised the companies to utilise quality products in building their infrastructure, “I want to say, briefly, that as you go towards the process of building, remember never to compromise quality…This is an opportunity to ensure that our people get the best the sector has to offer to the real and responsive economy…”
